Background Information

The Rio das Velhas starts at the Antonio Pereira's mountain, in Ouro Preto City. It flows through many cities, with a river basin of 3.694 square km. It is the biggest tributary of the Sao Francisco Bay river. In 1972, COPASA (the public water company) built the 'Rio das Velhas System.' This system, which can capture 6 million cublic liters of water per second, provides water for 1.5 million people in 5 cities.
