See the Similarities

Well, if you're wondering if any other rivers have the same problems as the Rouge, then the answer is "yes". One of these rivers is the Obion River in western Tennessee. To decrease severity and frequency of flooding, the river was dredged and straightened. The purpose was to restore unrestricted stream flow back to the "Pre-Civil War" era, drain the flood plains, develop desirable farmland and increase the channel flow. Like the Rouge, there were many problems associated with this channelization. It caused more flooding, created artifical swamps, and the channel became wider due to greater erosion of the banks.
