Where is this river?
|
|
Now, you might be wondering, "Where the heck is this river?" That is a very good question. The two maps on the left will aid my speech entitled: "The Rouge River, Location, History and Everything You Wished to Know and Some Things You Didn't." (Hey, a dog's gotta find some way to pass the time!) The Rouge River is located in Southeastern Michigan and consists of 4 branches: upper, middle, main, and lower. The river runs through the city of River Rouge before emptying into the Detroit River which connects Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. Now for some history. The Woodland Indians were the first to settle in the Rouge River area in the years between 1700-1850. They were soon followed by the French, the British and finally by the Americans. Many of the settlers relied on the Rouge River for their survival because it provided food and transportation. (Me, I just rely on my master to feed me at every meal.) In the years of 1850-1940, there was rapid urban growth with increased development and industry. These problems led to the first forms of river pollution. Sewer pipes were built to cope with the increased pollution and they emptied directly into the Rouge River. There has, however, recently been an effort to protect the quality of life along the Rouge River. With the building of treatment plants and stricter regulations, the quality of the river is improving. And I am happy to say that my flea problem is improving also. What, you don't think that was appropriate to say? |
