A petition went in effect to urge President Nixon to stop the channelization. This protest was lead by Roger Saillent, a member of the Rouge Rescue Commitee. Roger was concerned that the channelization would continue north of where it was being done. This was a concern for many others because if the project continued through the University of Michigan-Dearborn Campus and the Henry Ford Estate, it would ruin the natural beauty of those areas. Roger's petition was however turned down and channelization continued. The area of the Ford Estate was untouched, thank goodness, but much of the river was destroyed. There was a "cloak of secrecy" around the project and many citizens were not informed about it until it was too late to stop the construction. Newspapers wrote: "Is somebody trying to hide something or slip something over the public?"

This picture shows the river today. The water level was very high when the picture was taken, but if you enlarge it, you might be able to see the edge of the cement banks. Notice that the river is perfectly straight.
