'Washing' the river

Situação encontrada pelos alunos na visita à Beira-Rio.

Professor: Sérgio Barreto

In this picture you can see a woman using the river to wash clothes. This is an example of an economic use of the river. It is a business; they sell their service to other families. Unfortunately, the soap they use is another cause of pollution in the river. When we asked the women, they acknowledged the problems that they cause. But they need to do this work in order to survive. They have no other way of doing laundry and no other source of income. After speaking with these women, we think that having lectures about the river and its problems could be very useful. This would make people aware of the problems and maybe lead to improvements such as a public laundry where the women can work with dignity.
