Campinas

If you think that Amazonia is entirely full of big trees, think again. Jau National Park is so big that no one knows exactly what exists inside. For many years, ecologists were concerned about areas like the one pictured here because when they looked at satellite photos, the areas appeared to have been clear cut by illegal companies. But they were wrong. No one had guessed that this sort of vegetation existed in Amazonia. These areas are called "campinas."
