Park Ranger

A trip by boat from Manaus, the capital of Amazonas, to Jau takes 2 days. It's rather far, isn't it? But the distance is the park's best ally. Being so far away, the reach of the federal government is tenuous. There are only 3 park rangers in Jau. Last year, the government spent just 3000 reias (1500 US dollars) to maintain the park. It's very common for the rangers to run out of gas for boats. Poaching is a threat to 11 species of turtles and "ornamental" fish.
