Hui-Chin, a resident of Meinung , told me that the festival reminds people of the treasure they have in Meinung, which is the Yellow Butterfly Valley located between the two mountains on its northern edge.
The valley has a mild climate, and caterpillars and butterflies can get lots of food from Indian chestnut trees and Common Lantana, which are found all over the valley. The number of butterflies usually peaks in June and then again in October. At these times, as many as 10 million yellow butterflies could be seen dancing among the flowers and trees in the valley. Ten million! 'It is marvelous,' said Hui-Chi, 'Watching thousands of butterflies dancing around you makes you feel like you are in paradise.'
